Colombian Leader Declares 'I Will Resort to Weapons Once More' if United States Intervenes Militarily.

President Trump and President Gustavo Petro have turned up the volume in their verbal conflict, heightening strains bilaterally after American military units attacked Venezuela in an operation to oust Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He operates narcotics facilities and processing labs and his time is running out," the US president stated.

Growing Rhetoric coupled with Accusations

Addressing the press over the weekend, the American leader hinted at analogous use of force against Colombia, claiming Colombia faces serious problems and governed by a problematic figure who enjoys creating narcotics and selling it to the United States."

Although Colombia remains the world’s largest source of the narcotic, no proof exists linking President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is in any way tied to the business.

A Frayed Relationship

Colombia was historically a close partner of the US in the struggle combating drug cartels and enjoyed bipartisan support from American politicians, however, the relationship have deteriorated markedly following Trump was elected.

The nation's illicit drug economy is predominantly run by guerrilla factions like the Clan del Golfo, another leftist insurgency and breakaway groups of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), the majority of whose members disbanded after a 2016 peace deal.

Colombia's Strong Rebuttal

When asked whether armed intervention like that in Venezuela was on the cards for Colombia, Trump replied: "It sounds good to me."

Petro, once a member of a left-wing insurgent group who left armed struggle decades ago, firmly denied Trump's claims. "I am no an illegitimate leader nor am I a drug trafficker," he stated.

"Trump speaks without knowledge. End the false accusations," he expressed in a message.

"If they [the US] bomb peasants, they will transform into a multitude of fighters in the hills. And if they detain me, whom a large part of the population loves and respects, they will release the fierce spirit of the populace," the president cautioned.

From Guerrilla to Statesman

He passed some years as a young man belonging in the left-wing M-19 insurgent movement but is not believed to have ever participated in combat. Following his disarmament, he participated in drafting a new constitution in 1991 and later became a respected lawmaker. He served as mayor of Bogotá before winning the nation's highest office.

"I swore to never again hold a gun ... but in defense of my country I shall resume weapons once more," he affirmed.

Increased Security along with Cross-Political Opposition

The Colombian defence minister reported that the national leader's security detail had received additional support.

Several members of Colombia’s political right have allied themselves with Trump, however, leaders from all sides of the political spectrum have rejected the notion of an invasion on Colombia.

Political and Financial Sanctions

American authorities cancelled his travel authorization subsequent to he encouraged American soldiers to ignore unlawful commands. In October, the US enacted asset freezes on Petro, his spouse and various close collaborators.

Simultaneously as the US increased its forces in the region and striking vessels thought to carry drugs to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces have also conducted strikes on maritime targets off the Pacific coast adjacent to Colombia.
