Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the count of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The number of positions created to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
