The megacity Wakes Up to Toxic Haze Following Diwali
As Tuesday dawned inhabitants of the world's most polluted city were faced with inhaling dangerously toxic air that was classified as the "alarming" level.
Alarming Air Quality Readings
Several parts of the capital registered an air quality index above 500, which represents 10x the recommended threshold recommended by the WHO.
In some locations, concentrations of toxic particulate matter hit highs of 1800, amounting to fifteen to twenty times exceeding acceptable levels.
Firecracker Restrictions and New Policy Shifts
Beginning in 2020, officials had implemented a total prohibition on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during the Festival of Lights due to their significant contribution to the dangerous haze that blankets the metropolis as colder weather begins.
However earlier this year, the current local government approached the judicial authority to propose a modification of the ban.
Officials advocated for allowing "green crackers" – historically criticized by environmental experts as being only roughly 30 percent less polluting – as a middle ground between "heritage and environment".
Legal Decision and Implementation
Despite concerns of environmental and health advocates, the court approved the proposal, mandating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be ignited during designated hours throughout the celebrations.
On Monday night, there was widespread disregard of the regulated periods across the capital, with minimal regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the eco-friendly variety.
Numerous recording stations throughout Delhi recorded contamination reaching highest levels around midnight to extremely hazardous levels recorded during Diwali in at least three years.
Cross-Border Consequences
Extensive ignition of fireworks during the celebrations also initiated a blame game with neighbouring the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistani Punjab province partially attributing worsening air quality in their urban centers on hazardous particles coming from India following the celebrations.
Persistent Environmental Problem
The dangerously high levels of pollution in the city have continued as a significant challenge for more than 15 years, with the condition continuing to worsen.
Near celebratory seasons, the amount of toxic airborne contaminants in the environment has been found to increase dramatically to seventy percent above the most severe readings ever recorded in the Chinese city, which was formerly viewed as the world's most polluted metropolis.
Multiple Contamination Factors
The problem in Delhi is attributed to a convergence of different contributors including automobile exhaust, construction debris, development work, garbage fires and pollutants from crop residue ignition in adjacent states of neighboring agricultural zones.
In these regions, rural residents routinely set their fields on fire to expedite field preparation, generating hazardous smog that becomes contained over the city as cooler air arrives.
Public Health and Financial Impact
The economic and health consequences on the roughly thirty-three million inhabitants residing in the Delhi area is significant, according to numerous investigations.
This pollution leads to increased incidence of nervous system, heart and circulatory and breathing diseases, and can even lead to malignancies.
The pollution is projected to be accounting for approximately 10k premature mortalities each year in Delhi.
