During an first day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” America's largest city, promising “a new era” and an bold start to his tenure.

A Historic Mayor

The young figure, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this is rare and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose grasp the controls for transformation,” Mamdani stated.

Rejecting counsel to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my ideals for concern of being called extreme,” he said to rapturous applause.

The swearing-in was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.

A Costly Platform

Mamdani now faces one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Free buses
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A experiment of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these services may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Dynamics

The new mayor will deal with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as surprisingly friendly.

The Fundamental Tests of Governing

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
